Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Crisco
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup cocoa dissolved in hot water
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Cream Crisco and sugars together.
  2. Beat in eggs one at a time.
  3. Add the cocoa mixture and vanilla.
  4. Alternately add flour and buttermilk, beating well after each addition.
  5. Pour batter into a greased and floured 12-inch pan.
  6. Bake at 350°F for 20 minutes.
  7. Increase oven temperature to 375°F.
  8. Bake for an additional 10 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Cool and frost as desired.
