Tips & Substitutions

For creamier escalloped potatoes, consider substituting half of the milk with heavy cream. You can also use any cheese you have on hand, such as cheddar or mozzarella, for added flavor. If you prefer a bit of heat, add a pinch of cayenne pepper. Ensure the potatoes are cut uniformly for even cooking.

Serving Suggestions

Serve escalloped potatoes alongside a protein like roasted chicken or grilled steak for a hearty meal. They also pair beautifully with No Sugar Added Candied Carrots for a balanced plate. For a complete dinner, consider adding a side salad or some crusty bread.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) until heated through, about 20-25 minutes. You can also microwave individual portions, covering them to retain moisture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make escalloped potatoes ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the dish a day in advance. Assemble everything except for the eggs, cover, and refrigerate. When ready to bake, add the diced eggs, mix, and then bake as directed. This allows the flavors to meld together nicely.

What types of potatoes are best for this recipe?

Starchy potatoes like Russets or Yukon Golds are ideal as they break down slightly during cooking, creating a creamy texture. Waxy potatoes like red or new potatoes may hold their shape too well and not yield the desired creaminess.

Can I use a different type of cheese?

Absolutely! Feel free to experiment with various cheeses such as gouda, fontina, or even a spicy pepper jack for a kick. Mixing cheeses can also create a unique flavor profile that enhances the dish.
