Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 c. flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. red food coloring
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 7 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 c. buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Sift all dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Stir to combine.
  3. Add the shortening, buttermilk, and eggs, then beat with an electric mixer for 2 minutes.
  4. Pour the batter into greased and floured pans (2).
  5. Use a small tube pan if desired.
  6. Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. If using a tube pan, bake for 40 minutes.
