Ingredients

  • 8 to 10 slices white bread, cubed
  • 3 cups grated Cheddar cheese
  • 2 cups broccoli flowerets
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion or chopped red or green pepper or 1 cup mushrooms, all sautéed in 1 to 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cups precooked ham, cubed
  • 12 eggs
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9 x 13 x 2 1/2-inch casserole dish.
  2. Cover the bottom with 2/3 of the bread cubes.
  3. Sprinkle half the cheese over the bread.
  4. Add the cubed ham, sautéed vegetables, remaining bread, and remaining cheese.
  5. Beat the eggs in a bowl. Add the milk, salt, and pepper; mix well.
  6. Pour the egg mixture over the layered ingredients in the casserole.
  7. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35 to 40 minutes.
  9. Cover with foil during the last part of baking to prevent browning.
