Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 cup chopped dates
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. Mix together and boil for five minutes the sugar, raisins, shortening, and hot water.
  2. Add spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves) and mix well.
  3. Allow the mixture to cool to lukewarm.
  4. Add the beaten egg to the cooled mixture and stir well.
  5. Sift together the flour, salt, and soda, then add to the mixture.
  6. Stir until well combined.
  7. Add chopped dates and chopped nuts to the mixture and mix well.
  8. Spread the batter in a greased and floured jelly roll pan.
  9. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 25 to 30 minutes.
  10. Frost the cooled cookies and cut into squares.
