Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • dash of salt
  • 2/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/4 cup softened butter
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
  • 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt, and 2 tablespoons cocoa.
  3. Cream together 1 1/2 cups sugar and softened butter until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the milk and mix well.
  5. Gradually add the sifted dry ingredients and mix until smooth.
  6. Stir in chopped walnuts or pecans.
  7. Spread the batter evenly in a greased 13 x 9-inch pan.
  8. In a separate bowl, combine the remaining 1 cup sugar, brown sugar, and 2/3 cup cocoa.
  9. Spread this mixture evenly over the batter in the pan.
  10. Slowly pour the boiling water over the entire mixture.
  11. Bake for 40 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  12. Remove from oven and place on a cake rack to cool slightly.
  13. Serve warm with whipped topping or cool, inverted from the pan, cut into squares.
