Ingredients

  • 2 lb. ground beef
  • 2 slices bread
  • 2 medium onions, grated
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • dash of pepper
  • 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup raisins
  • 3 1/2 cups drained sauerkraut
  • 8 gingersnaps

Instructions

  1. Combine ground beef, bread, half of the grated onions, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, and pepper in a bowl.
  2. Mold the mixture into small meat balls.
  3. In a Dutch oven, combine the remaining grated onions, brown sugar, raisins, drained sauerkraut, gingersnaps, and tomato sauce.
  4. Add the meat balls to the sauce mixture.
  5. Simmer uncovered for 1 1/2 hours, until the meat is cooked through and flavors meld.
