- Combine chopped dates, baking soda, and boiling water in a bowl and let cool.
- Cream shortening, then gradually add sugar, beaten eggs, and vanilla.
- Add sifted flour and salt to the shortening mixture, alternating with the cooled date mixture.
- Pour the batter into a greased 8 x 12-inch Pyrex baking dish.
- Sprinkle chopped walnuts and chocolate chips on top.
- Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 45 minutes.
