Ingredients

  • 1 cup chopped dates
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1-1/2 cups boiling water
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • 1-1/4 cups sifted flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Instructions

  1. Combine chopped dates, baking soda, and boiling water in a bowl and let cool.
  2. Cream shortening, then gradually add sugar, beaten eggs, and vanilla.
  3. Add sifted flour and salt to the shortening mixture, alternating with the cooled date mixture.
  4. Pour the batter into a greased 8 x 12-inch Pyrex baking dish.
  5. Sprinkle chopped walnuts and chocolate chips on top.
  6. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 45 minutes.
