Tips & Substitutions

For optimal flavor, use a mix of lean and fatty ground beef. You can substitute ground turkey or plant-based meat for a lighter version. If you prefer a bit of heat, consider adding a pinch of cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes. Pre-cooked bacon can be added for extra flavor, similar to the addition in Jack'S Swedish Meat Balls.

Serving Suggestions

Goulash is delicious on its own, but you can serve it with a side of crusty bread or a fresh garden salad for a complete meal. It pairs beautifully with Bordelaise Sauce if you want to elevate the dish further. Consider topping with shredded cheese or freshly chopped herbs for added flavor.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. To reheat, warm on the stovetop over low heat, adding a splash of water or broth to prevent sticking. You can also microwave in short intervals, stirring in between until heated through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I freeze goulash for later?

Yes, goulash freezes well. Allow it to cool completely before transferring to airtight containers. It can be frozen for up to 3 months. To reheat, thaw overnight in the refrigerator and then warm on the stovetop or microwave until heated through.

What can I use instead of macaroni?

If you don’t have macaroni, you can substitute with other pasta shapes like penne, rotini, or even gluten-free pasta. Just ensure you adjust the cooking time according to the type of pasta used for the best texture.

Can I make goulash in advance?

Absolutely! Goulash can be made a day ahead. In fact, letting it sit overnight allows the flavors to meld together beautifully. Just reheat gently before serving, and consider adding a little water or broth to maintain moisture.
