Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 ounces red food coloring
  • 2 teaspoons cocoa
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Cream the shortening, sugar, and eggs together until well blended.
  2. Make a paste of the cocoa and red food coloring, then add to the creamed mixture.
  3. Add the flour, salt, buttermilk, and vanilla to the mixture and mix well.
  4. Dissolve the baking soda in the vinegar and gently fold into the batter.
  5. Pour the batter evenly into two greased 8 or 9-inch cake pans.
  6. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Allow the cakes to cool before frosting and serving.
