Ingredients

  • 2 large Bermuda onions, sliced
  • 1/2 lb. Swiss cheese, grated
  • 8 slices French bread
  • 1/2 c. milk
  • 2 to 4 Tbsp. butter
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 1 can cream of chicken soup
  • 1 Tbsp. soy sauce

Instructions

  1. Simmer onions in butter in a heavy pan on low until tender and separated, stirring constantly.
  2. Place the onions in a 2-quart casserole. Sprinkle with pepper and top with cheese.
  3. Heat the cream of chicken soup, milk, and soy sauce until blended.
  4. Pour the soup mixture over the onions and cheese; stir gently.
  5. Butter the bread slices on both sides and top the casserole, overlapping the slices.
  6. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes.
