Ingredients

  • 1 envelope active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup chicken broth
  • 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup grated sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed rosemary
  • 1/2 teaspoon dill
  • 1/4 teaspoon marjoram
  • 1/2 cup lukewarm milk
  • 1/4 cup chicken stock or broth
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Proof yeast in 1/4 cup chicken broth for 10 minutes.
  2. Sift together the whole wheat flour and salt into a large bowl.
  3. Add grated Cheddar cheese, finely chopped onion, crushed rosemary, dill, and marjoram to the flour mixture and toss.
  4. In another bowl, combine milk, the yeast mixture, chicken stock or broth, one egg, and honey; mix well.
  5. Add the liquid mixture to the flour mixture and stir until the dough is well blended.
  6. Gradually add all-purpose flour and knead the dough until it forms a ball.
  7. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  8. Form the dough into a ball, place it in a buttered bowl, and turn to coat with butter.
