Ingredients

  • 1 cup diced dates
  • 3/4 cup nut meats of your choice
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup candied fruit

Instructions

  1. Put nuts, diced dates, candied fruit, butter, and baking soda in a bowl.
  2. Add boiling water and beat to combine.
  3. Beat the eggs separately.
  4. Add sugar to the beaten eggs, then incorporate into the mixture.
  5. Sift together flour and salt, then add to the mixture and stir until just combined.
  6. Pour the batter into a buttered loaf pan.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 1 hour or until a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Turn the bread out of the pan to cool.
  9. Frost the top before serving if desired.
