  • 1 medium can black olives, chopped
  • 1 lb. loose sausage, browned and drained
  • 1 lb. smoked sausage, sliced thin and cooked in water
  • 2 bunches green onions, chopped
  • 1 large can sliced mushrooms

  4. Pull the far side of the dough over the filling and tuck under the ingredients.
  5. Fold the ends up and smooth, then pull the other side over and tuck.
  6. Butter the top of each loaf.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 to 40 minutes until the top is light brown.
  8. Can be frozen and reheated at 350°F (175°C) for 15 to 20 minutes.

Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider using Italian sausage instead of loose sausage, or even a mix of both. You can substitute the cheeses with your favorites, such as provolone or fontina. If you're short on time, pre-made pizza dough can be used instead of frozen loaves. For added texture, sprinkle some Italian herbs on top before baking.

Serving Suggestions

This Italian Sausage Bread makes a fantastic appetizer or main dish. Serve it with a side of marinara sauce for dipping. Pair it with a fresh green salad or some roasted vegetables for a complete meal. It also complements well with Grandma Tuzzolino'S Spedini for a delightful Italian feast.

Storage & Reheating

Allow the Stromboli to cool completely before wrapping it tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place it in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 15 to 20 minutes until warmed through and the crust is crispy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make the Stromboli ahead of time?

Yes! You can assemble the Stromboli and refrigerate it before baking. Just cover it with plastic wrap and bake it the next day. This allows the flavors to meld beautifully, making it even more delicious.

What can I use instead of olives?

If you're not a fan of olives, consider adding chopped bell peppers or artichokes for added flavor and texture. You can also omit them entirely or substitute with sun-dried tomatoes for a different twist.

Can I freeze the cooked Stromboli?

Absolutely! Once baked, let the Stromboli cool completely, then wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and aluminum foil. It can be frozen for up to 2 months. When ready to enjoy, thaw it in the refrigerator and reheat in the oven.
