Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup applesauce
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sliced almonds
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • strawberry or raspberry preserves
  • powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and grease a cookie sheet.
  2. Beat the egg slightly in a medium bowl.
  3. Stir in milk, applesauce, melted butter, and almond extract.
  4. Add the flour, sliced almonds, sugar, baking powder, and salt to the mixture and stir just until moistened.
  5. Shape the dough into hearts or rounds and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Spoon a small amount of preserves into the center of each scone or spread on top before baking.
  7. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. Allow to cool slightly, then dust with powdered sugar before serving.
