Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup butter or oleo
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup cocoa
  • 2 cups raisins
  • 3 cups buttermilk or sour milk
  • 5 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon or allspice or cloves

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven and prepare your baking pan.
  2. Cream together the sugar and butter until smooth.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla, mixing well after each addition.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine cocoa, flour, soda, and spices.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, alternating with buttermilk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.
  6. Fold in raisins, and if desired, chopped pecans and candied cherries.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Allow to cool before serving.
