  • 1/4 tsp. granulated garlic
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 14 oz. catsup
  • 1 tsp. chili powder
  • 2 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/3 c. sugar
  • 1 c. water

Instructions

  1. Saute chopped onions in margarine until softened.
  2. Add all other ingredients except Pepsi-Cola and cook about 15 minutes.
  3. Stir in 1/2 cup Pepsi-Cola and bring to a boil.
  4. While sauce simmers, boil chicken until almost done, saving broth for rice.
  5. Add cooked chicken to sauce and simmer until heated through.

Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider adding smoked paprika or cayenne pepper for some heat. If you don't have Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce can be a suitable substitute. You can also use fresh garlic instead of granulated for a fresher taste. If you want a thicker sauce, simmer it longer to reduce the liquid further.

Serving Suggestions

This barbecue sauce is perfect for grilled chicken, and it pairs beautifully with Zesty Oyster Crackers as a crunchy side. Serve it over rice to soak up the flavorful sauce or alongside coleslaw for a refreshing contrast. For a complete meal, consider serving with grilled vegetables or a simple green salad.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftover barbecue sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. For longer storage, you can freeze it in ice cube trays and transfer to a freezer bag, allowing you to thaw smaller portions as needed. Reheat gently on the stovetop or microwave, stirring to maintain consistency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this barbecue sauce vegan?

Yes, you can easily make this recipe vegan by substituting margarine for a plant-based butter and ensuring that the Worcestershire sauce is vegan-friendly, as some brands contain anchovies. The rest of the ingredients are naturally vegan, making this a great option for plant-based diets.

How can I adjust the sweetness of the sauce?

To adjust the sweetness, you can increase or decrease the amount of brown sugar and regular sugar according to your taste preference. If you prefer a less sweet sauce, try reducing the sugar amounts gradually and tasting as you go until you reach your desired flavor.

Can I use this sauce for grilling?

Absolutely! This barbecue sauce is fantastic for grilling. Brush it on chicken, ribs, or veggies during the last few minutes of cooking to create a delicious glaze. Just be cautious not to apply it too early, as the sugars can burn over high heat.
