- Melt the caramels with one third of the evaporated milk until smooth.
- Melt the butter with the remaining evaporated milk; add all the cake mix to the milk and butter mixture.
- Stir well and fold in the chopped pecans.
- Spread one quarter of the batter into each of the two 9x12-inch pans.
- Bake at 350°F for 20 minutes.
- Remove from oven and let cool for 5 minutes.
- Sprinkle half of the chocolate chips over each pan.
- Pour half of the caramel over each pan.
- Drop the remaining batter over the caramel layer in each pan.
- Bake at 350°F for an additional 30 minutes.
- Cool for 4 to 5 hours before cutting into squares.
