Ingredients

  • 3 sticks butter
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 4 1/2 cups sifted plain flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla

Instructions

  1. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  3. Combine sifted flour, baking powder, salt, and soda in a separate bowl.
  4. Alternately add the flour mixture and buttermilk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with flour.
  5. Stir in vanilla extract.
  6. Line layer pans with waxed paper and grease with butter.
  7. Pour batter into prepared pans.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 15 minutes.
  9. Cool layers before assembling.
