  • 4 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup cooking oil
  • 1 cup chopped nuts
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 cup sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Mix flour, sugar, eggs, vanilla, and cooking oil until well combined. Add chopped nuts and chocolate chips last, mixing until the dough is stiff.
  2. Spread the dough evenly onto a greased 12 x 24-inch cookie sheet.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
  4. Remove from oven and cut into bars while still warm.
  5. Turn bars onto their sides and sprinkle with a mixture of 1 cup sugar and 4 tablespoons cinnamon.
  6. Bake the bars on their sides for 10 minutes at 350°F.
  7. Turn bars to the other side, sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon, and bake for another 10 minutes.
  8. Allow bars to cool slightly before serving. Makes about 7 dozen bars.

Tips & Substitutions

For a nut-free version, substitute the chopped nuts with additional chocolate chips or dried fruit. Ensure your baking sheet is well greased to prevent sticking. If the dough seems too dry, a splash of milk can help achieve the right consistency. Consider using almond extract instead of vanilla for a different flavor profile. These bars are great for holiday gatherings or as a sweet treat alongside coffee.

Serving Suggestions

Serve Mandel Brats as a delightful dessert or snack. They pair wonderfully with a cup of coffee or tea, making them perfect for afternoon gatherings. For a festive touch, dust them with powdered sugar or serve them with a dollop of whipped cream. These bars also complement well with fruit salads or can be enjoyed alongside the flavors of Region Three Treats.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftover Mandel Brats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. For longer storage, you can freeze the bars for up to three months. To reheat, simply place them in a preheated oven at 300°F for about 10 minutes to restore their chewy texture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use different types of nuts in this recipe?

Absolutely! Feel free to experiment with various nuts such as walnuts, pecans, or hazelnuts. Just ensure they are chopped to a similar size for even distribution in the dough. Each type of nut will impart its unique flavor and texture to the bars, making each batch a delightful variation.

How can I make these bars gluten-free?

To make Mandel Brats gluten-free, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend. Look for a blend that includes xanthan gum, as it helps with the structure of baked goods. Keep in mind that the texture may vary slightly, but they will still be delicious!

Is it necessary to bake the bars on their sides?

Baking the bars on their sides allows for even caramelization and enhances the crispy texture. This step helps develop a delightful crust while keeping the inside chewy. Skipping this step might result in a softer bar, so for the best results, follow the instructions as written.
