Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 2 squares chocolate
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 eggs

Instructions

  1. Cream shortening and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  2. Melt chocolate in hot water on the stove, then add to the creamed mixture.
  3. Mix soda with buttermilk.
  4. Add the soda buttermilk mixture to the creamed mixture.
  5. Gradually add flour and milk alternately to the mixture, mixing well.
  6. Add vanilla extract and mix.
  7. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  8. Pour batter into an 8-inch square pan, 9-inch round pan, or 9x13-inch pan.
  9. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  10. Let cool and serve.
