Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 cups oats
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/2 pound dates, chopped
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2/3 cup water

Instructions

  1. Measure dry ingredients into a large bowl and cut in the butter or margarine until crumbly.
  2. Press half of the crumb mixture into a greased 9 x 9-inch pan.
  3. Cook the dates with sugar and water until thickened.
  4. Spread the date mixture over the pressed crumbs in the pan.
  5. Sprinkle the remaining crumb mixture on top.
  6. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
  7. Allow to cool before slicing into squares.
