Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1 egg
  • 2/3 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • salt
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup pecans
  • 2 1/2 cups (scant) flour

Instructions

  1. Cream shortening, cocoa, and sugar together.
  2. Add the egg and beat well.
  3. Combine dry ingredients: flour, baking powder, soda, and salt.
  4. Alternately add dry ingredients and buttermilk to the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
  5. Stir in vanilla and chopped pecans.
  6. Pour batter into prepared cake pans and bake at 350°F until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
