Delicious fudge-filled bars with a crunchy oat topping, rich chocolate and candy coating, perfect for satisfying sweet cravings and sharing at gatherings.

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease a jelly roll pan measuring 15 1/2 x 10 1/2 x 1 inch.
  3. Mix oats, flour, nuts, brown sugar, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  4. Stir in margarine until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Reserve 1 1/2 cups of the crumbly mixture for topping.
  6. Press the remaining mixture into the prepared pan.
  7. Bake for 10 minutes.
  8. Heat shortening in a 1-quart saucepan over low heat until melted.
  9. Stir in 1 cup of candies; press candies with the back of a spoon until broken into pieces.
  10. Cook and stir until chocolate is melted; pieces of candy coating will remain.
  11. Remove from heat and stir in condensed milk.
  12. Spread the chocolate mixture over the baked crust.
  13. Mix the reserved crumbly mixture with remaining candies.
  14. Sprinkle over the chocolate layer and press lightly.
  15. Bake until golden brown, about 20 minutes.
  16. Cool completely and cut into bars.
