Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider using dark chocolate morsels instead of semi-sweet. If you're out of walnuts, chopped pecans or almonds can be excellent substitutes. To enhance the mocha flavor, add an extra tablespoon of instant coffee. Make sure to cool the melted chocolate completely before adding it to the mixture to avoid cooking the egg.

Serving Suggestions

These Mocha Walnut Cookies are perfect as a coffee break treat and pair beautifully with a cup of espresso or hot chocolate. For a delightful dessert experience, serve them alongside Chocolate Mousse (Josh Thacker's Favorite Dessert) or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. They also make a great gift when packaged in a decorative box.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use regular coffee instead of instant coffee?

Yes, you can use brewed coffee in place of instant coffee. Use about 1/4 cup of strong brewed coffee and reduce the boiling water accordingly. Keep in mind that this may alter the texture slightly, so ensure that the dough is not too wet.

What can I do if my cookies spread too much while baking?

If your cookies spread too much, it may be due to warm dough. Make sure to chill the dough for at least 30 minutes before baking. You can also check that your butter is softened but not melted, as melted butter can lead to excessive spreading.

How can I make these cookies gluten-free?

To make these cookies gluten-free, substitute regular flour with a gluten-free all-purpose flour blend. Ensure it contains a binding agent, such as xanthan gum, to mimic the texture of traditional cookies. Adjust baking time slightly if needed, as gluten-free flours can behave differently.
