Ingredients

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons melted shortening or bacon grease

Instructions

  1. Sift dry ingredients into a bowl; add buttermilk and egg.
  2. Mix well. Heat an iron skillet or pie pan with shortening or bacon grease.
  3. Pour the heated grease into the mixture and stir well.
  4. Pour the entire mixture into the hot skillet or pan.
  5. Bake at 400°F until done, approximately 20 to 25 minutes.
