Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup butter
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 2/3 cup molasses
  • 2 1/8 cups pastry or cake flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon mace
  • Seeded raisins, cut in pieces and dredged in 1/2 cup flour
  • Citron, cut in thin strips and dredged in flour

Instructions

  1. Butter and flour a loaf pan.
  2. Set the oven at 350°F (175°C).
  3. Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs, milk, and molasses to the creamed mixture and beat well.
  5. Sift together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, allspice, ground cloves, and mace.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until smooth.
  7. Stir in the dredged raisins and citron pieces.
  8. Spoon the batter into the prepared loaf pan.
  9. Bake for about 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
