Ingredients

  • 1 pkg active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/3 cup vegetable shortening
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup dry milk
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Soften yeast in the 1/4 cup warm water.
  2. Combine boiling water, vegetable shortening, sugar, and salt in a bowl.
  3. Cool the mixture to lukewarm and add the yeast.
  4. Stir in the beaten egg.
  5. Add dry milk.
  6. Beat in as much flour as possible and then continue to add enough to make a soft dough, kneading for 8 to 10 minutes.
  7. Put the dough into a large oiled bowl, turning to coat it all over.
  8. Cover and let rise in a warm place (85°F) until doubled in size, about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
