Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups boiling water
  • 1 cup quick rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup cocoa

Instructions

  1. Pour boiling water over rolled oats; set aside.
  2. Cream sugar and shortening together; add eggs and vanilla and beat well.
  3. Add the oat mixture to the creamed mixture.
  4. Sift dry ingredients (flour, salt, baking soda, cocoa) together and beat into the mixture.
  5. Pour batter into a greased 9 x 13-inch pan.
  6. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 39 minutes.
  7. Dust with powdered sugar or frost with chocolate creme frosting to serve.
