Ingredients

  • 3 cups dark brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 3 eggs
  • 3/4 cup sour milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla flavoring
  • 3/4 cup cocoa
  • 3/4 cup boiling water
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons soda
  • 3 cups sifted cake flour

Instructions

  1. Combine cocoa, boiling water, and soda; let cool.
  2. Cream shortening and gradually add dark brown sugar, beating thoroughly.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  4. Stir in vanilla flavoring.
  5. Alternately add sour milk and sifted cake flour, beginning and ending with flour, mixing after each addition.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pans.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 40 minutes.
