Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 egg, well beaten
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • dash of nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Thoroughly cream together sugar and shortening.
  2. Add egg, molasses, and buttermilk; blend well.
  3. Sift together dry ingredients and add to creamed mixture.
  4. Mix thoroughly and add vanilla.
  5. Chill dough until easily handled.
  6. Divide dough into 4 equal parts.
  7. Roll each part into about 9-inch circles.
  8. Place each circle in greased 9-inch cake pans.
  9. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10 to 15 minutes or until done.
  10. Allow layers to cool.
  11. Spread layers with prepared dried apples between each layer.
