Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. ginger
  • 1/4 tsp. cloves
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 c. butter, melted
  • 1 c. light molasses
  • 1/2 c. hot water

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°.
  2. Grease a 9 x 9 x 1-inch pan.
  3. Sift flour with baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and salt. Set aside.
  4. In a large bowl, beat the egg, melted butter, molasses, and hot water until mixed well.
  5. Add the flour mixture, beating until smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30 to 35 minutes.
  7. Cool partially in the pan on a wire rack.
  8. Serve warm.
