Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup butter or other shortening
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg, well beaten
  • 2 cups sifted cake flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sour milk

Instructions

  1. Cream butter and brown sugar together until well combined.
  2. Add the well-beaten egg and beat thoroughly.
  3. Sift the cake flour, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, allspice, cloves, cinnamon, and salt together three times.
  4. Add the dry ingredients and milk alternately to the creamed mixture, starting and ending with dry ingredients.
  5. Pour the batter into a greased tube pan.
  6. Bake in a moderate oven at 350°F (175°C) for 45 to 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
