Ingredients

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 egg
  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice or cloves
  • 1 1/3 cups buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoons soda
  • 1/4 cup hot water
  • 1 cup molasses

Instructions

  1. Cream together the brown sugar and butter.
  2. Add the egg and beat well.
  3. Sift together the flour, cinnamon, ground ginger, and allspice or cloves.
  4. Alternate adding the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the creamed mixture, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Dissolve the baking soda in hot water and add to the batter.
  6. Stir in the molasses until well combined.
  7. Pour the batter into a prepared baking pan.
  8. Bake in a hot oven until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
