Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange peel
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup sour milk or buttermilk
  • 3 1/2 cups sifted flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Set the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cream together the shortening, butter, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs, orange juice, grated orange peel, vanilla, and sour milk or buttermilk until well combined.
  4. Sift together the flour, baking powder, soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, mixing well after each addition.
  6. Optional: fold in chopped dates or nuts.
  7. Drop teaspoonfuls of the batter onto a greased cookie sheet.
  8. Bake for 15 minutes or until lightly golden.
  9. Remove from oven and cool on wire racks.
