Ingredients

  • 1 lb. dates
  • 1 lb. candy orange slices
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 3 cups flour
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 cups sugar

Instructions

  1. Cut dates and orange slices into small pieces using kitchen scissors.
  2. Dredge the chopped dates and orange slices in 1 cup of flour.
  3. Cream together the sugar and oleo (butter or margarine).
  4. Add beaten eggs and soda dissolved in buttermilk to the creamed mixture.
  5. Mix in the remaining 3 cups of flour along with the floured dates and orange slices.
  6. Divide the batter evenly into two greased and floured loaf pans.
  7. Bake at 300°F (150°C) for 1 1/2 hours until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
