  • 1 large box oatmeal
  • 2 lb. onions, diced
  • 5 Tbsp. seasoned salt
  • 1 box onion soup mix
  • 5 Tbsp. mustard
  • 30 eggs
  • 5 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Mix the lean hamburger meat, tomato sauce, oatmeal, diced onions, seasoned salt, onion soup mix, mustard, eggs, and Worcestershire sauce well by kneading with hands.
  2. Pat the mixture into four 2-inch steamer pans.
  3. Pour two No. 10 cans of Ragu sauce over the tops of the meat in each pan.
  4. Seal the edges with sauce.
  5. Bake for 2 to 2½ hours at 350°F.

Tips & Substitutions

For added flavor, consider using fresh herbs like parsley or basil in the meat mixture. You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option. If you don't have onion soup mix, a blend of dried onion flakes and spices can work as a substitute. Ensure the meatloaf is well mixed for even cooking and flavor distribution.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the meatloaf with a side of mashed potatoes or roasted vegetables for a hearty meal. It also pairs beautifully with Hot Party Sandwiches for a fun gathering. A fresh garden salad or coleslaw can balance the richness of the meatloaf, making for a well-rounded dinner.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. To reheat, slice the meatloaf and warm it in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 20 minutes, or microwave slices on medium power for 2-3 minutes until heated through. This keeps the meatloaf moist and flavorful.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I freeze the meatloaf before baking?

Yes, you can freeze the unbaked meatloaf. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and store it in the freezer for up to 3 months. When ready to bake, thaw it in the refrigerator overnight before cooking at 350°F for the recommended time.

What can I use instead of tomato sauce?

If you don't have tomato sauce, you can use crushed tomatoes, tomato paste diluted with water, or even barbecue sauce for a different flavor profile. Each option will add its unique taste, so choose according to your preference.

How do I know when the meatloaf is done?

The best way to check if the meatloaf is done is to use a meat thermometer. It should register at least 160°F in the center. If you don't have a thermometer, you can cut into the meatloaf; it should be firm and the juices should run clear.
