Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 sticks butter
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups plain flour
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 tablespoon sugar

Instructions

  1. Mix sugar, butter, egg yolk, vanilla, salt, and flour until well combined.
  2. Spread the mixture evenly on a greased cookie sheet.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat egg white and sugar until blended and slightly frothy.
  4. Spread the egg white mixture over the batter on the cookie sheet.
  5. Sprinkle chopped nuts evenly over the top.
  6. Press the nuts lightly into the batter.
  7. Bake at 250°F (120°C) for 1 to 1½ hours until golden and set.
  8. Cut into squares while warm and allow to cool before serving.
