Ingredients

  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup chopped dates
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 1/3 cup chopped nuts
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/3 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Pour boiling water over chopped dates and soda, then let stand while preparing remaining ingredients.
  2. Cream together sugar and butter, then add the beaten egg and vanilla, mixing well.
  3. Stir in chopped nuts.
  4. Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt, then add to the creamed mixture.
  5. Combine with the cooled date mixture.
  6. Pour batter into a greased 9 x 12-inch pan.
  7. Bake in a moderate oven for 30 minutes, or until done.
