Tips & Substitutions

For added flavor, consider marinating the rabbit or chicken in apple cider overnight. If you don't have walnuts, pecans or almonds can be great substitutes. To enhance the dish, you can add some fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary during cooking. Adjust the seasoning to taste, especially if using low-sodium broth. This dish can be served with a side of Dilly Artichoke Rice Salad for a fresh contrast.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of meat in this casserole?

Yes, you can substitute rabbit with fryer chicken or even try other meats like pork or turkey. Just adjust the cooking time based on the meat used. Chicken recipes generally adapt well, ensuring they are cooked through and tender.

How do I know when the meat is properly cooked?

The meat should reach an internal temperature of 165°F to be considered safe to eat. You can use a meat thermometer to check this. Additionally, the meat should be tender and easy to pull apart with a fork, indicating it's cooked properly.

Can this casserole be made ahead of time?

Absolutely! You can prepare the casserole in advance and refrigerate it before baking. Just cover it tightly with foil or plastic wrap. When ready to serve, bake it from cold, adding an extra 10-15 minutes to the cooking time to ensure it's heated through.
