Ingredients

  • 2 1/3 cups sifted flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 3/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 3/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts
  • 1/2 cup raisins

Instructions

  1. Sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
  2. Add the brown sugar, shortening, and buttermilk to the sifted ingredients and mix well.
  3. Beat vigorously for 2 minutes.
  4. Add eggs and beat for 2 minutes more.
  5. Fold in chopped nuts and raisins.
  6. Pour the batter into a greased baking pan.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35 to 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
