- Pour hot water over baking soda and dates; cool and set aside.
- Cream shortening until smooth.

- Alternate adding flour and the date mixture into the batter; mix well.
- Place two-thirds of the batter in a Bundt pan.
- Sprinkle with half of the nuts and broken kisses.
- Pour the remaining batter on top.
- Top with remaining nuts and kisses.
- Bake for 1 hour, or until browned.
