Ingredients

  • 5 eggs
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 tablespoons melted lard
  • 1 teaspoon grated nutmeg
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • about 2 quarts flour
  • 1 pint buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoons salt

Instructions

  1. Beat the eggs until well combined.
  2. Add sugar and melted lard; mix thoroughly.
  3. Combine the dry ingredients: grated nutmeg, soda, baking powder, salt, and about 2 quarts of flour.
  4. Gradually add the dry mixture to the egg and sugar mixture, alternating with buttermilk, until a soft dough forms.
  5. Knead the dough slightly on a floured surface.
  6. Pat and roll the dough into a 1/4-inch thickness.
  7. Cut or shape the dough into desired forms.
  8. Fry in deep hot oil until golden brown and cooked through.
  9. Dust the fried doughnuts with powdered sugar before serving.
