  • 2/3 cup warm water (110-115°F)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tbsp. cooking oil
  • 1/2 tsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 3 cups (12 oz.) shredded Muenster cheese
  • 1/2 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic salt
  • 1/8 tsp. pepper
  • 1 slightly beaten egg
  • 1 Tbsp. water

Instructions

  1. Soften yeast in warm water.
  2. Beat in 1 cup of flour, cooking oil, 1/2 teaspoon sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
  3. Stir in enough of the remaining flour to make a moderately stiff dough.
  4. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 5 to 8 minutes.
  5. Place in a lightly greased bowl, turning once to grease the surface. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide into 2 portions.
  7. Cover and let rest for 10 minutes.
  8. Roll out each portion to a 13-inch circle.
  9. Place one circle on a greased round pan.
  10. Combine 1 beaten egg, shredded Muenster cheese, chopped parsley, garlic salt, and pepper; spread over the dough in the pan.
  11. Place the second dough circle over the cheese filling.
  12. Trim the edges and flute the dough.
  13. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 20 minutes.
  14. Mix the remaining beaten egg with 1 tablespoon of water; brush over the top of the baked bread.
  15. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and bake for an additional 12 minutes.
  16. Cut into wedges and serve hot.

Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider using a blend of Muenster and Monterey Jack cheese. If you prefer a vegetarian option, substitute the egg wash with a plant-based milk for brushing. To save time, you can use pre-made pizza dough instead of making it from scratch. Ensure the dough is well-kneaded for the best texture.

Serving Suggestions

This Golden Cheese Wheel is perfect as a party appetizer or a snack. Serve it warm with a side of marinara sauce for dipping. It pairs beautifully with a fresh salad or a bowl of soup for a light meal. For a complete dinner, consider serving alongside a slice of Lucille'S Pound Cake for dessert.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and warm the cheese wheel for about 10-15 minutes until heated through. This helps maintain the crispy exterior while ensuring the cheese melts beautifully.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use different types of cheese for this recipe?

Absolutely! While Muenster cheese is recommended for its meltiness, you can experiment with other cheeses like Gouda, Cheddar, or even a sharp Parmesan for different flavors. Just ensure that the cheese is shred-able and has good melting properties.

How can I make this recipe ahead of time?

You can prepare the dough and filling a day in advance. Store the dough in the refrigerator after the first rise and let it come to room temperature before rolling it out. Assemble the cheese wheel and refrigerate it until you're ready to bake. Just add a few extra minutes to the baking time.

Is this recipe suitable for freezing?

Yes, you can freeze the assembled cheese wheel before baking. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and then in aluminum foil to prevent freezer burn. When ready to bake, thaw it in the refrigerator overnight and then bake as directed for fresh, warm cheese goodness.
