Ingredients

  • 3 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 package RapidRise yeast
  • 1 cup water
  • 6 ounces thin sliced corned beef
  • 1/4 pound sliced cheese
  • 1 beaten egg
  • caraway seed

Instructions

  1. Set aside 1 cup of flour.
  2. Mix the remaining flour, sugar, salt, and yeast in a bowl.
  3. Stir in hot water and margarine until combined.
  4. Mix in enough reserved flour to make a soft dough.
  5. On a floured surface, knead the dough for 4 minutes.
  6. Roll the dough out on a greased baking sheet to a 14-inch by 10-inch rectangle.
  7. Place thin slices of corned beef and cheese in layers in the center one-third of the dough.
  8. Cut 1-inch wide strips along the sides of the filling, out to the edges of the dough.
  9. Fold the strips in at an angle across the filling, alternating sides to create a braided effect.
  10. Cover the dough and let it rise for 15 minutes over a pan of hot water.
  11. Brush the top with beaten egg and sprinkle with caraway seed.
  12. Bake at 400°F for 25 minutes or until light brown.
  13. Cool slightly on the pan and serve immediately.
