Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup nuts
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Mix shortening, sugar, water, salt, raisins, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves in a saucepan until well combined.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil, then remove from heat.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine flour, soda, and baking powder.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the saucepan mixture, stirring until smooth.
  5. Stir in nuts and vanilla.
  6. Pour the batter into a greased and floured 9 x 12-inch pan.
  7. Bake at 300° to 325° for about 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
