Ingredients

  • 1 c. shortening
  • 1/2 c. brown sugar
  • 1/2 c. white sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. water
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1 c. brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Cream together shortening, 1/2 cup brown sugar, white sugar, water, vanilla, and egg yolks.
  2. Sift together flour, baking soda, salt, and cream of tartar.
  3. Combine the dry ingredients with the creamed mixture and mix until it resembles cookie dough.
  4. Wet your fingers and spread the dough into a 10 x 15-inch glass dish.
  5. Whip the egg whites and cream of tartar until stiff.
  6. Add 1 cup brown sugar to the whipped egg whites and mix.
  7. Spread the whipped egg white mixture over the dough in the dish.
  8. Sprinkle chocolate chips over the top.
  9. Bake until golden brown.
  10. Let cool and cut into 24 squares.
