Tips & Substitutions

For best flavor, use fresh spinach and watercress. If you can't find California chiles, try using dried red pepper flakes for a similar heat. You can substitute mozzarella with feta cheese for a tangy twist. To save time, pre-cook the cactus and store it in the fridge. This salad also pairs well with Mexican Cornbread(Delicious!) for a hearty meal.

Serving Suggestions

This vibrant salad is perfect as a light main dish or a refreshing side. Serve it alongside grilled chicken or fish for a balanced meal. It also pairs beautifully with Baja Lasagne for a delightful Mexican-inspired feast. Garnish with extra chiles for added crunch and spice.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftover salad in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. To keep the ingredients fresh, try to separate the dressing from the salad until ready to eat. If reheating cactus, warm it gently on the stove with a splash of water to keep it tender.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this salad ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the components in advance. Wash and dry the spinach and watercress, and store them separately. You can also pre-cook the cactus and chill it. Just assemble the salad right before serving to keep it fresh and crisp.

What can I use instead of cactus?

If cactus is unavailable, consider using diced zucchini or bell peppers for a similar texture. These alternatives will provide a fresh crunch and can be prepared in the same way, ensuring your salad remains colorful and satisfying.

How can I add more protein to the salad?

To boost the protein content, consider adding grilled chicken, shrimp, or black beans. These ingredients will complement the salad's flavors while making it more filling. You could also sprinkle some roasted chickpeas on top for a crunchy texture.
