Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1 bar German chocolate
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 package yeast
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 2 1/2 cups self-rising flour
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 4 egg whites

Instructions

  1. Melt the German chocolate in boiling water and set aside to cool.
  2. Mix yeast with warm water and set aside.
  3. Cream shortening and sugar well.
  4. Add egg yolks one at a time, beating after each addition.
  5. Add vanilla, melted chocolate, and yeast mixture.
  6. Sift together self-rising flour, salt, and cocoa.
  7. Stir soda into buttermilk.
  8. Add alternately the flour mixture and buttermilk to the batter, beating well after each addition.
  9. Fold in beaten egg whites.
  10. Bake in 4 layers at 350°F (175°C) for 35 minutes.
  11. Put filling between layers and frost the cake.
