Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup butter or shortening
  • 4 eggs, beaten separately
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 cup mashed potatoes
  • 6 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup walnuts

Instructions

  1. Cream sugar and butter or shortening; add beaten egg yolks, then mashed potatoes.
  2. Mix all dry ingredients separately, sifted together 3 or 4 times.
  3. Add alternately the dry ingredients and milk to the creamed mixture.
  4. Add vanilla and walnuts.
  5. Fold in beaten egg whites last.
  6. Bake at 350°F until done, approximately 30 minutes.
